Benefits of Active Patch™

The Filtrona Active Patch™ filter is a single segment carbon filter. It retains a similar taste to traditional Mono-Acetate filters while providing the benefits of an activated carbon.

The distinct benefits of the Active Patch™ filter are:

• Active Patch™ has all the advantages of carbon filters, while retaining a taste familiar to consumers. It can therefore be used to introduce carbon filters into a traditionally Mono-Acetate market.

The Active Patch™ filter also offers a number of other key benefits:

• The use of carbon in Active Patch™ format offers a unique selling point and brand differentiation possibilities
• The granular additives reduce the vapour phase and semi-volatile components in mainstream smoke without additional ventilation which creates a smoother, cooler smoke
• Secondary machine contamination can be eliminated as the carbon is positioned away from any cutting areas

Construction of Active Patch™

The Active Patch™ filter consists of high-quality crimped cellulose acetate fibres which are bonded together with a controlled amount of plasticiser to give a firm structure. This is enclosed in an outer plugwrap which can be either standard or porous depending on the ventilation requirements. This plugwrap is applied first with a patch of adhesive and then with granular activated carbon, achieved by passing the plugwrap/adhesive through a continuous flow of carbon.  Excess carbon is then cleaned away to leave a patch of granular carbon prior to forming the rod.

The carbon patch can be in a single patch formation or laid out in a split patch configuration surrounding the ventilation zone of the finished product where increased loadings are required.

A wide range of patch sizes and configurations, filter lengths and circumferences can be selected to suit the taste and filtrations requirements of the customer, including the use of the active patch technology in a multi-segment filter.  Samples of other granular or particulate additives are also possible.  Please contact us for further details.
