Nicotine

In low concentrations, the substance acts as a stimulant in mammals. Nicotine is named after the tobacco plant Nicotiana tabacum, named after Jean Nicot de Villemain, the French ambassador in Portugal in 1560. He promoted the tobacco plant's medicinal use. Nicotine was first isolated from the tobacco plant in 1828 by German chemists Posselt and Reimann.
