The Global Tobacco: New Product Development – Filter Focus report is a collaboration between Euromonitor International Ltd and Filtrona Filter Products to explore the latest trends in the global cigarette market and demonstrate the technical parameters behind the filters which are driving innovation and adding value to cigarette brands.
New product development (NPD) in the tobacco industry is driven by a) restrictive tobacco control legislation and b) the need to increase value sales. If tobacco control is driving up prices, blocking marketing and de-normalising smoking by imposing smoking bans and health warnings, NPDs are the industry’s response to this. Other than reacting to legislation or a new smoker demographic, NPDs also necessarily seek to create value by offering ‘added-value’ to a product that has essentially changed little over the decades. Adding value takes many forms, e.g. innovation in: pack type, tobacco blend, filters and flavours.

This report focuses on the last two areas of innovation: filters and flavours. First, the rapid expansion of the slim and super slim cigarette market segment is explored. Virtually all the multinational cigarette brands now have a superslim brand variant and this exciting development is examined closely in a case study of Russia. The report also looks at the popularity of flavoured cigarettes, especially menthol, and includes case studies on the growing market in Japan and the legislative environment in the USA.

Activated Carbon technology is often combined with other filter technologies to add value to the cigarette brand. This report explores the market for activated carbon filters and the performance properties of this additive. Finally, the growing trend towards cigarette brands incorporating filters with recess filters or cut-away cross-sections to communicate brand identity is examined and how this developing market segment has been supported by Filtrona’s new Icon range.
