Smoke Testing - Mainstream - Tobacco Specific Nitrosamines

CigaretteSmokeMachine

Understand the key constituents of cigarette smoke created once the tobacco is ignited. Mainstream smoke leaves the mouth end of the cigarette after it passes through the tobacco column and filter, and is inhaled by the smoker.

This range of tests provides data for the following constituents of mainstream smoke. Click on each substance tested for further information and interesting facts.

Tar
Nicotine
Carbon Monoxide
Phenolic compounds
Carbonyls
Volatile organic compounds
Filter nicotine retention
Aromatic Amines
Pyridine
Quinolene
Styrene

Nitrosamines can be found in latex products such as condoms and balloons, and in many foodstuffs, especially beer and fish.  Tobacco Specifc Nitrosamines (TSNA) is a form of nitrosamine only found in tobacco and includes the following chemicals:

  • NNN, N-Nitrosonornicotine
    The most abundant tobacco-specific nitrosamine
  • NAB, N-Nitroanabasine
  • NAT, N-Nitroanatabine
  • NNK, 4-(N-nitrosomethylamino) – 1 – (3-pyridy) – 1-butanone
Hydrogen Cyanide
Ammonia
