Smoke Testing - Mainstream - Hydrogen Cyanide

CigaretteSmokeMachine

Understand the key constituents of cigarette smoke created once the tobacco is ignited. Mainstream smoke leaves the mouth end of the cigarette after it passes through the tobacco column and filter, and is inhaled by the smoker.

This range of tests provides data for the following constituents of mainstream smoke. Click on each substance tested for further information and interesting facts.

Tar
Nicotine
Carbon Monoxide
Phenolic compounds
Carbonyls
Volatile organic compounds
Filter nicotine retention
Aromatic Amines
Pyridine
Quinolene
Styrene
Tobacco Specific Nitrosamines

Hydrogen Cyanide

This molecule has a faint, bitter, almond-like odour that some people are unable to detect due to a genetic trait. Hydrogen cyanide is obtainable from fruits that have a pit, such a cherries, apricots, apples, and bitter almonds. It is speculated that life may have originate from the condensation of hydrogen cyanide which acted as precursor to amino acids and nucleic acids.
