Alternative Carbons
At the Filtrona Technology Centre, we are constantly investigating ways to improve our processes and evaluating potential new materials. The exploration of alternative sources of activated carbon reflects this focus on continuous improvement. A series of different types of carbon, both synthetic and natural, have been assessed and those sourced from coal and sustainably managed wood proved to deliver similar performance to standard activated carbon from coconuts.
Results for the vapour phase retention data (above) for 3 month old cigarettes comparing different carbon types. The % vapour phase retention values in the above table are in comparison with an acetate control cigarette. Coconut and coal carbons have the same density so were only compared at the same weight. Wood carbon is less dense and so was compared at the same weight and the same volume.
The investigation into these alternative sources resulted in some interesting data. The coal and sustainably managed wood activated carbons out-performed standard coconut carbon in some areas.
